This refers to the progressive blockage of the arteries that carry blood to the brain. Over time, this condition can cause a stroke or cerebrovascular accident. It occurs in older people who usually have cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, diabetes and smoking. It is also known as cerebrovascular disease.

Carotid Artery Disease
How can we treat it?
CONSERVATIVE MEDICAL TREATMENT: This aims to prevent the disease from progressing by using medicines that help control cardiovascular risk factors. We use antiplatelet medication and control high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It is very important to follow OPTIMAL MEDICAL TREATMENT. THIS IS KNOWN INTERNATIONALLY AS “BEST MEDICAL TREATMENT”
SURGICAL TREATMENT: The artery is repaired through open surgery: the vessel is cleaned out, the plaque of calcium and atheroma is removed, and the artery is then closed with a patch that maintains proper blood flow. The operation requires a hospital stay and a postoperative period of less than a week. It is known as endarterectomy.
ENDOVASCULAR TREATMENT: This involves placing a stent, or spring, at the point where the artery has narrowed in order to restore blood flow and prevent the formation of thrombi or clots that could end up blocking an artery in the brain. It is performed through punctures in the groin or neck. This technique is minimally invasive and patients can be back home within 48 hours. It is known as Carotid stenting.
