Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by the abnormal build-up of lymphatic fluid in the tissues, usually in the arms or legs, due to a disorder of the lymphatic system. It causes chronic swelling, heaviness and skin changes. It may be slowly progressive, but can advance to fibrosis and hardening of the skin if left untreated.

There are two main types:

PRIMARY: A genetic condition present from birth, or

SECONDARY: The result of disorders of, or procedures on, the lymphatic vessels (lymph node removal for breast cancer, or procedures in the groin area).
